British Airways computer crisis hits Manchester Airport flights

British Airways' technical issues are impacting passengers flying through Manchester Airport.

It was reported this morning that the operator had cancelled all short-haul flights from Heathrow Airport until at least Saturday afternoon.

BA apologised for the cancellations, caused by technical issues which they emphasised were not due to a cyber attack.

According to the airline's website, three services into Manchester were cancelled on Saturday morning - with arrivals scheduled for 9.35am, 10.50am and 11.55am marked with a red banner.

It's understood to be likely that these cancellations will impact on outward domestic flights from Manchester. BA have been asked for clarification.

Long-haul flights were still operating but customers were warned of possible delays.

BA warned it 'anticipated further disruption during the day' due to the hardware issue.

Apologising, they said that due to continuing technical issues they had cancelled short-haul flgihts from Heathrow and that customers due to travel after midday should check their flight status on ba.com before travelling to the airport.

BA's website and app were inaccessible for several hours on Friday, leaving customers unable to book flights or check-in online.

It's understood that much of the airline's processing is now having to be done manually.

That includes check-in, stand planning - directing aircraft to gates - and flight management systems which send flight plans to crews.

The setback follows a week of storm disruption last week.

BA chose to jettison domestic flights because long-haul route cancellatons will have greater impact on passengers.

A BA spokesman said passengers booked on cancelled services could get a full refund, and all those on short-haul flights today could also choose a later date.

A spokesman added: "Our teams have been working hard through the night and will continue to do so to resolve the issue as soon as possible. We advise our customers due to travel today to check ba.com for the latest flight information before coming to the airport.

"We know we have let our customers down and we will do everything we can to make this up to them – but for now our focus is on getting as many customers and flights away as we can."

Anyone due to travel is advised to check their flight status before travelling to the airport.

The major outage has also caused pile-ups of luggage and some customers have been stuck on planes after landing at Heathrow.
