Britannia Hotel has been voted the worst hotel chain in the UK. This is the ninth year in a row that the hotel chain has been voted the worst in the UK.
As reported by Coventry Live, a survey of 2,603 hotel guests over 15 months to October 2021 by consumer watchdog Which? put the Britannia Hotel at the foot of a league table of 24 large hotel chains with a score of just 49 per cent.
It was rated one star out of five for bathrooms, and two stars for seven other categories such as cleanliness, customer service and value for money. Yet guests paid far more than to stay at the cleaner, more comfortable Premier Inn.
Britannia was also the chain where guests were most likely to say they had a problem. More than half of guests surveyed said they ran into a problem during their stay at the hotel chain, with cleanliness being the most common issue.

Here in Nottingham, the Britannia Hotel is in Maid Marian Way. On TripAdvisor the hotel is given an overall rating of poor 2.0. One reviewer gave it a one rating but only because they’re not able to give it a zero.
They said: “Noise, dirt room. The wind sounds like blowing in your bed. The "bar" stock is still water and bottled beer. The accommodation location is the only thing what is good. Highly overpriced. Never recommend this place.”
Another review from February 2020 gave the hotel a rating of two and described the hotel as smelly and unclean.
They said: "Whole place needed ripping out and modernising. Walls had brown stains on. Feel like I need to shower as soon as I get home. Good central location. Constant smell of cigarette smoke. Whole place is just dingy and shabby. Wouldn’t recommend. Could get a premier inn for the same price!"
Another TripAdvisor reviewer said that the hotel wasn't clean and left the hotel a rating of two.
They said: "The place is in a good location with good connections. Comfortable bed and well provided with all that would be needed for a hotel stay of a few days. But the place did not feel very clean. Maybe it was just an unlucky room or an unlucky few days but the desk in the room felt sticky and the room smelled of smoke all day."
More recent reviews talk of the hotel cancelling bookings at late notice.
Which? also believes there is hope for Britannia Hotel as its score of 49 per cent is the best the hotel chain has ever had. Three stars for bed comfort is a triumph by its bleak standards. However, a string of two-star ratings, for cleanliness among other things, as well as one-star bathrooms, shows it has a long way to go.
Topping the list, however, was Premier Inn, which has more than 800 hotels throughout the UK and an average room price of just £66. Customers were particularly impressed by their king-sized beds and the selection between firm or soft pillows.
