Britain's oldest worker, 90, has no plans to leave job and hopes to be there at 100

A 90-year-old great-grandad has said he has "no intention of giving up work" and is looking forward to be still at the same company when he "hits the big century".

Vic Sutton, from Walthamstow, has been named Britain's oldest employee and has been working as an engineer for the last 76 years.

He began his career as a mechanical engineer apprentice back in 1949 - just four years after the Second World War ended - and since then, the great-grandad has embarked in several roles across the engineering sector, including working as a radio engineer in the Royal Air Force.

Vic, who turned 90 earlier in April, is currently employed as a calibration engineer at Teepee Electrical in Bloxwich, Walsall, in the West Midlands.

He is still going strong working three days a week at the factory and has vowed to keep going until he is 100.

Vic said: "My family keep asking me when I'm going to stop, but I genuinely just love coming to work. I love my family to bits, but I have no intention of giving up work just yet. As long as I remain fit enough - both in body and mind - I hope to still be working at Teepee Electrical when I hit the big century."

Vic even celebrated his birthday milestone on the shop floor on Tuesday (April 11) before enjoying a surprise party with his colleagues.

The firm make complex harnesses and wiring looms for clients in the automotive, electrification and blue light sector.

He continued: "I've been here two decades, starting off doing the drawings for the wiring harnesses for some big-name customers. These days I'm responsible for the calibration of more than 428 hand tools used by my colleagues to crimp the wires.

"We've got our own testing room that's like my own den and my problem-solving skills are definitely put into good use as the management team tend to bring me in to make things more efficient at our Leamore Road Factory."

Vic, who witnessed the final days of the Battle of Britain from his family home in Walthamstow, has experienced the biggest changes in manufacturing with the emergence of technology and many things now being operated by computers.

Over a near eight decade career Vic has spent time working at English Electrical, British Electronic Products, Thorn EMI and the RAF.

And alongside his job, Vic has an insatiable appetite for Northern Soul, becoming one of the scene's most loved DJs playing over 700 gigs in his lifetime.

He only recently packed up his decks a few months ago when the weight of the equipment became too heavy for him to carry.

Vic has four grandchildren called Ashleigh, Amy, Ellie and William from his daughter Joanne and son Darren, and in March this year, he welcomed his fourth great-grandchild Elliot James into the world, joining his other great-grandchildren Nevaeh, Harlow and Nixon.

Steve Clarke, managing director of Teepee Electrical, said Vic was adored by all of his colleagues.

He added: "Vic is a walking, talking inspiration - it's as simple as that. Everyone loves him, and he really brings a feel-good factor to the factory, not to mention years of manufacturing and problem-solving experience that makes a real difference on our shop floor.

"His stories are amazing, from overcoming tuberculosis as a child and playing in two bands in Stoke-on-Trent to rubbing shoulders with Alvin Stardust and Billy Fury."
