The Sugababes found themselves at the expense of an odd drugs joke from Daisy May Cooper at the BRIT Award s last night.
Viewers were left gobsmacked after ITV failed to censor the quip, which saw the 36-year-old actor and comedian making the cocaine gag whilst presenting the award for Best Alternative Rock Award to The 1975 at the 2023 ceremony in London’s O2 Arena on Saturday evening.
Although the Sugababes weren;t nominated for a music award in any of last night’s categories, Daisy said: “God, we went into the toilets earlier and we saw the Sugababes.
“And they weren't doing coke – they were lovely.”
Despite Daisy’s microphone crackling as she uttered the insensitive joke, it was not bleeped out of the televised show for home viewers.
Viewers quickly noted how ITV failed to cut Daisy on in time on Saturday night.
"Did find the bit where Daisy May Cooper mentioned coke funny, before ITV could get the blank out noise on," one quipped on Twitter as the show aired.
Another added: "Thoughts and prayers to the Audio Muted team failing to mute Daisy May Cooper talking about the Sugababes in the toilets #BRITs."
The recreational, illegal drug is sometimes coined as ‘Sugar’ or ‘Candy’ on street level, which may well be the root of Daisy May’s misguided joke.
And this wasn’t the only blunder which audiences were aware of last night - a technical issue forced the show to air a repeat from 2022 part-way through the ceremony.
The team at the coveted awards show decided to cut to previous footage of Adele singing I Drink Wine during last year’s awards.
Taking the reins on the unscheduled mishap, presenter Mo Gilligan proved to be a true professional as he informed the audience of the deviation away from the planned events of the ceremony.
While it wasn’t clear exactly what the technical problems were, home audiences would have noticed several problems during the night when ITV appeared to fail to censor winners who swore at the event.
And it wasn’t long before viewers were already subjected to foul language, as Aitch managed to drop the first S-bomb of the night during his acceptance speech for Best British Hip Hop/Rap/Grime Act. Following this was Becky Hill who said the same S-word.
Aitch admitted during his speech: “I’m s***ing myself,” before Becky said that her prepared speech for Best Dance Act was “going to go to s***” as she was so nervous.
If that wasn’t enough, Wet Leg used their platform when accepting their award for Best Group to say: “F*** the Tories.”
Although some of the moments were somewhat bleeped out, the words were audible on TV and would have been noticed by viewers.
