Bristol weather: When storms will hit city as thunder and heavy rain forecast

Bristol is expected to see a barrage of heavy rain and thunder as a new weather front sweeps across the country. The Met Office placed the city under two yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and thunder today following a hotweekend.

A rain weather warning was in place for much of the South West from 7pm on Sunday (June 11), bringing a risk of flooding overnight. This remained in place in Bristol, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire until 9am on Monday morning (June 12).

Meanwhile, a yellow thunderstorm warning is due to come into place across Bristol, Wales, and the Midlands later today, warning of potential downpours, lightening strikes, and hail. This warning is active from 12pm until 9pm today.

It comes after a hot weekend, with temperatures reaching 30C for the first time this year - Heathrow reached 30.5C, the Met Office confirmed on Saturday and Kew Gardens recorded 32C yesterday. While the Met Office predicts temperatures of up to 29C in Bristol on Tuesday, the mercury is expected to remain in the low to mid-20s today.

This morning is still expected to remain dry, according to the Met Office weather map, with bouts of rain not forecast until 12pm. But when the rain does hit, it is expected to be heavy.

Some very heavy showers are expected from midday and will pick up through the afternoon before their peak between 2pm and 6pm. From around 7pm, the showers are currently expected to fade out and are then predicted to avoid the city completely, though parts of South Gloucestershire and Weston-super-Mare will still see some rain.

The Met Office says: "Thunderstorms and torrential downpours may bring disruption to parts of England and Wales during Monday."

According to the Met Office's thunderstorm warning, people should expect the following:

  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
  • Some communities might become cut off if roads flood.
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life.
