Bristol weather: Met Office issues rare red warning for wind in Bristol ahead of Storm Eunice

The Met Office has issued an exceptionally rare red warning of wind in the Bristol area ahead of Storm Eunice hitting the country tomorrow (Friday, February 18).

The weather forecasting service issued the severe danger to life weather warning this morning at 10.50am. The alert is in place from 7am to noon tomorrow and covers the western side of Bristol, with an amber warning for wind in place for the rest of the city.

The Met Office is expecting Storm Eunice will cause significant disruption and dangerous conditions due to extremely strong winds.

It states: "

  • Flying debris resulting in danger to life
  • Damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down
  • Uprooted trees are likely
  • Roads, bridges and railway lines closed, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights
  • Power cuts affecting other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and homes, including flooding of some coastal properties"

An emergency Cobra meeting has been called this morning on response to Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice. Helicopters are on stand-by as Storm Eunice is set to hit the region tomorrow (Friday, February 18).

An amber weather warning for wind covering Wales and large parts of England including the South West is also in place from 5am tomorrow to 9pm. The Met Office warns that Storm Eunice “may cause significant disruption due to extremely strong winds” and that “there is a good chance that flying debris could result in a danger to life”

This comes as the area is still recovering from the damage caused by Storm Dudley earlier this week. An area in the city centre remains cordoned off this morning due to damage caused last night.

And pictures being shared on social media also show that a tree has fallen along one of the city's river path, while a large tree also fell on St George's Park last night.
