Bristol Waste announces major change for city's recycling centres

Anyone wanting to use one of Bristol's two - soon to be three - recycling centres will have to book in advance, from next month onwards.

Bristol Waste has announced it intends to ditch the present system, where people can go on alternate days depending on whether they have odd or even number plates on their vehicles.

The council-run waste company said more detail would be coming soon, but claimed the new booking system would eliminate queueing time, ease congestion on the roads around the recycling centres and 'ensure a smoother on-site experience'.

The proposal was first mooted last month, but today Bristol Waste confirmed it is definitely going to happen. Our city currently has two council recycling centres - at Avonmouth and at St Phillips. A third is due to open this year off Hartcliffe Way in Bedminster.

In a statement on social media, a spokesperson for Bristol Waste said: "Get ready for less queuing and more recycling! From May you will need to book to visit the Bristol City Council recycling centres. Keep an eye on our social channels and website for more information soon.

"The booking system will create a better experience for residents by eliminating queuing time, easing congestion on roads around the recycling centres, and ensuring a smoother on-site experience," they added.

They said the booking system would apply to all recycling centres, and there would be a way to book offline. No one would need to book to use the Avonmouth Reuse Shop, and people can book with 'as little as an hour's notice'.
