A Bristol teenager devastated by the tragic death of his beloved sister on Christmas Day has dedicated this year's festive season to raising money for national cancer charity Macmillan once again.
15-year-old Jake Skinner from Downend lost his sister Stacie to anaphylactic shock in 2015 and has spent every year since, lighting up his family's home after learning how much she loved decorating her work desk this time of year.
Now, in memory of his nan, who he lost to spleen cancer last year, he has decided to jointly celebrate his loved ones by raising money to help save the lives of those affected by the disease. He said: “It means a lot to have so many followers supporting us each year and you get a few familiar faces who contribute towards fundraising. Seeing people stop to admire the lights is a great feeling.”
The official switch-on, held at the end of last month, saw more than 200 people attend as the Salvation Army Band played Christmas carols. Last year Jake’s incredible fundraising efforts were recognised when he won BBC Radio 1’s Teen Award, presented by Prince William at Kensington Palace. He was nominated as part of the Bristol Young Hero Awards in 2019 and won the Enterprise Young Hero Award.
He said: “It was an amazing experience meeting William and seeing the beautiful building they live in was a very fun experience overall.” Proud dad Jeff Skinner said his son is an 'inspiration to all' adding: “Jake’s efforts are outstanding and I’m very proud of what he has achieved and the money he has raised.”
To date, Jake has raised £12,000 for people living with cancer on track to raise even more with his latest Just Giving campaign. Kaeti Morrison, Macmillan fundraising manager for the south west, said: “Jake deserves all the awards going. His Christmas displays get bigger every year and what he has raised for people living with cancer over the last few years is amazing. Macmillan relies almost entirely on donations from the public and people like Jake so a huge thank you from Macmillan to you Jake and the whole Skinner family who must be very proud of you. I’d urge the people of Bristol to flock to see his display this year, surely his best yet.”
Jake hopes to go even bigger next year with possible plans for Santa’s grotto. Visitors can check out Jake’s festive illuminations every day from 5pm to 8pm until December 27 at 26 Sutherland Ave, BS16 6QJ. Tea and hot chocolate will be served on weekends with mince pies, chocolate and music. You can support Jake’s festive light display and Macmillan here
