James Belshaw - 6
Made a couple of first-half saves to keep the deficit at one but he would have been disappointed to concede at his near post, although Brandon Hanlan struck it especially well, also taking his shot early. Belshaw also kept the scoreline to just 2-0 with a fine stop with his feet as Wycombe threatened to pull clear.
Jarell Quansah - 6
His confidence on the ball is an obvious strength and it really is a sight to see him glide out of defence but the Liverpool loanee did get caught in possession one too many times. That said, he did stand up to a lot of Wycombe’s physicality well, getting stuck in and winning some key headers.
James Connolly - 5
Playing Wycombe isn’t a pleasant experience for the defender and he struggled once again in the centre of the back. His timing in the challenge was a little off and he got caught on his heels, occasionally losing his man. Hooked at half-time as Barton looked to get more on the front foot.
Lewis Gibson - 6
Rovers’ best centre-back, certainly on the ball, as he tried to step through the Wycombe press in the first half and there was one outstanding diagonal that found Josh Coburn from which he should have hit the target. He was, however, constantly troubled by the visitors’ heavy artillery and part of a Gas defence that never looked quite secure all night.
Scott Sinclair - 6
Did his best to find some penetration in a frustrating first 45 minutes and he was busy on the ball and often available, looking to take Joe Jacobsen on 1vs1 but his final ball was a little inconsistent and he overran it, when trying to force the issue.
Grant Ward - 8
It feels strange to award a high mark for a defensive midfielder in what was a questionable performance at the back for the Gas but Ward really was excellent in his positioning, use of the ball and the way he was always available for a pass, easing pressure on his teammates. If there’s one criticism it’s you’d like him to carry the ball forward that little bit more when space opens up in front of him.
Lamare Bogarde - 6
There’s so much to like about the Dutchman who is so calm and classy in possession, and covers so much ground. Unfortunately he was a little too calm when he received a pass in the first half, turning it over and seconds later Hanlan fired Wycombe ahead. Retreated to right-back in the second half, showcasing his versatility.
Lewis Gordon - 6
A strong first-half in which he brought real width to the team and was purposeful in possession was tempered by a second 45 in which, as he switched to left-back, he found himself going backwards too many times.
Aaron Collins - 6
Just not his night - or day, if you consider the Wales disappointment - as after a bright start with some flicks and a pass to release Coburn he got stuck between positions and couldn’t influence the game as he tends to do. Was a little guilty of letting Garath McCleary run clear for the killer second as well.
John Marquis - 6
There wasn’t a lot wrong with the striker’s performance as there was clear motivation from him to chase lost causes and try and get things moving, plus he linked up well with the midfield but the chances that fell his way were a little scrappy.
Josh Coburn - 7
He looks to have shaken off that niggly injury that plagued him last month and for much of the game he had the run of the Wycombe defence with two excellent chances to score; the first saved by Max Stryjek, the second fired just wide. Also made a menace of himself after the break but started to tire, as the physical wear and tear took its toll.
Substitutes
Ryan Loft (for Connolly, 46) - 7
Introduced to add greater muscle in attack and he connected with two Evans crosses, the second striking the post, as the Gas pushed for an equaliser before Wycombe’s second dampened chances of a comeback.
Antony Evans (for Sinclair, 46) - 7
As mentioned, his delivery found its intended targets on a few occasions and he was a little more precise in the final third than Sinclair with his passing but, and it was probably a symptom of the attacking system Barton deployed, he did find himself a little overrun in midfield.
Glenn Whelan (for Coburn, 83) - N/A
Subs not used: Ellery Balcombe, Callum Macdonald, Luke McCormick
