Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Shrewsbury: Loft impactful but Gas get caught up in messy draw

James Belshaw - 7

Made a sloppy start, gifting Tom Bayliss a chance with a poor clearance, but that was the only fault of significance for the afternoon. Produced important saves to deny Taylor Moore and Tom Bayliss and was left with no chance of keeping out the equaliser.

Luca Hoole - 6

With the game descending into a bit of a mess, Hoole's chances to bomb forward were limited, but he defended well up against the threatening George Nurse, blocking several crosses. Was beaten too easily by Rekeil Pyke late on but not much else troubled him.

Alfie Kilgour - 6

Started erratically and almost scored a comical own goal, only for Belshaw to hack his errant back-pass off the line. Did improve as the game went on and came up with some important headers in the second half.

Lewis Gibson - 7

Another solid afternoon in possession and few chances came Shrewsbury's way in his channel.

Lewis Gordon - 5

Took the negative option too many times in possession and was taken off at the hour mark. Part of the learning curve for the young defender.

Paul Coutts (c) - 6

Still getting up to speed after the mix of suspension and injury issues that started the season. He was steady but there were chances to turn inside and open up the play that he didn't capitalise on, playing its part in Rocers' stodgy build-up play.

Jordan Rossiter - 6

Was seemingly targeted by the antics of Shrewsbury, who were desperate to get a reaction from him whenever they could. He kept his cool in that regard and scrapped away in midfield in a game that lacked in quality.

Harry Anderson - 6

Plugged away from first minute to last, but it was to be a frustrating afternoon, summed up by his first-half header cracking the post. He ought to have done better with that chance, but he grafted hard on an afternoon when Rovers needed to work for a point.

Antony Evans - 6

A similar theme to recent performances, with questions to be asked about his decision-making, but there were still glimpses of quality including some dangerous crosses late on that could have been converted on another day.

Aaron Collins - 7

Was enduring a quiet afternoon but burst into life to provide a precious moment of quality in the second half, spinning brilliantly to bamboozle the defence and tee up Loft for the opener. Even when he is off-colour, he can change the direction of a game in a single moment.

John Marquis - 6

Grew frustrated by the service he received, but he twice went close in the first half, seeing a shot blocked after a weaving run before heading narrowly wide from Evans' cross. A working-class player fit for a working-class club, getting an ovation when he was substituted after another gruelling shift leading the line. But Rovers need to get more from him as additions are made to the squad in the closing days of the window. The connectivity is still not quite there.

Substitutes

Sam Finley (for Coutts on 61') - 6

Brought a bit more quality into the centre of the park and was smart to win a foul or two to ease moments of pressure. Blazed over with a late half-chance.

Ryan Loft (for Gordon on 61') - 8

Scored his first Mem goal with a fine finish soon after coming on, sliding the ball beyond Marko Marosi from Collins' pass.

Harvey Saunders (for Marquis on 77') - 5

On the fringes in this cameo appearance.

Not used: Anssi Jaakkola, Glenn Whelan, Jerry Lawrence, Malik Sesay.
