Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Forest Green: Belshaw excellent as Saunders makes impact

James Belshaw - 8

The Gas had their number one to thank for keeping the game goalless at half time, with the visitors forcing several crucial saves as the interval loomed. He produced full-stretch stops to repel Kyle McAllister and Reece Brown before denying McAllister with his feet. He got close to Jordan Moore-Taylor's header that put Forest Green ahead, but he had no chance of keeping out Regan Hendry's late curler.

James Gibbons - 8

Made the odd dart forward in the first half but his best contribution came when Belshaw was beaten by Jamille Matt's strike, which cracked the post and span across the goalmouth. The right-back reacted brilliantly to steal it off the toes of the waiting FGR man who was poised to tap into an empty net. He made another important intervention in the second half, blocking McAllister's shot after Rovers were left exposed.

Luca Hoole - 6

Made several important clearances as Forest Green came on strong at the end of the first half, and the way he handled a dangerous situation under pressure from substitute Josh March showed his composure.

James Connolly - 6

Had to get used to life with a new defensive partner and by and large he did fine. Moved the ball with his usual efficiency, but his defence was left exposed much more than he would want. The back four felt the absence of Paul Coutts and Sam Finley acutely.

Trevor Clarke - 6

Moves like Road Runner with his small, yet speedy legs, and there was a desire to break forward with the ball from deep which occasionally caused the visitors some concern, but he was pretty well contained on the whole.

Jordan Rossiter - 5

Brought control in the opening exchanges but he started to struggle as the game went on. His passing lacked precision in the second half, giving the ball away too often.

Zain Westbrooke - 5

A frustrating afternoon as he struggled to impose himself on the game. Was on a different wavelength to his teammate at times, summed up by the rollicking he got from John Marquis when the striker was dissatisfied by Westbrooke's hopeful ball forward.

Harry Anderson - 6

Raided forward with intent from first minute to last and he was unfortunate with a couple of rasping shots either side of half time. The first was fired straight into the midriff of goalkeeper Luke McGee, when a foot either side would have been enough to score, such was the power of the striker. The second drifted just wide from range.

Antony Evans (c) -6

Wore the armband and tried to take the game by the scruff of the neck. There were glimpses of inspiration and he laid on some good chances, but on the whole, his delivery was a bit short of his usual quality.

Aaron Collins - 7

Almost unlocked the defence with a moment of inspired play in the number 10 positioning, but his pass for Marquis was cut out. Displayed his coolness in the box to equalise, sitting a defender on his backside before finding the bottom corner.

John Marquis - 6

Delivered on the promise of hard graft, not allowing the FGR defence to rest for a moment, but he will want to be more involved when it comes to getting on the end of chances. Very little came his way.

Substitutes

Harvey Saunders (for Clarke on 68') - 8

Gave Rovers a new threat in attack with his speed and persistence, and that was the source of the equaliser. He chased a long ball, pounced when it went loose and his cutback dribbled into the centre for Collins, who took the chance

Ryan Loft (for Westbrooke on 68') - 7

Drew a good save from McGee with a header seconds after coming on and he battled hard. Harshly treated by the officials.

Not used: Anssi Jaakkola, Alfie Kilgour, Glenn Whelan, Jerry Lawrence, Ryan Jones.
