Bristol Rovers fans plan touching tribute to daughter of icon Darrell Clarke at Port Vale clash

Bristol Rovers fans plan to show their support for former manager Darrell Clarke when his Port Vale side visit the Mem on Saturday.

Clarke suffered tragedy in February with the death of his 18-year-old daughter Ellie, and the Gas icon has inspired many with his courage in the aftermath, leading Vale to promotion via the League Two play-offs just a few months later.

Gasheads, led by the Bristol Rovers Away Days Twitter account, plan to show solidarity for their double promotion-winning former manager with a minute's applause in the 18th minute, much like the 16th-minute applause that has become a regular occurrence at home games in support of Nick Anderton – who is recovering after a cancer operation.

The idea has been backed by Port Vale fans and it is sure to be an emotional moment at the Mem when the crowd pays tribute to a young woman taken far too soon. An inquest last month concluded Ellie had taken her own life.

In a statement at Nottinghamshire Coroner's Court, Ellie's mum said: "Ellie was a loved sister, granddaughter, niece and friend, she was the best big sister to her siblings. Always there for advice and guidance, and to tell them off as well.

"The moment I heard the words 'She's gone' was the very moment our hearts shattered into pieces and our world as we knew it turned to darkness. We are grateful to the coroner for her thorough investigation into Ellie's death."

Vale are enjoying a fine return to the third tier, occupying ninth place after 20 games, with impressive wins over Plymouth Argyle and Derby County under their belt.

Clarke has cemented legendary status in BS7 after masterminding an iconic period in the club's recent history, leading the club from non-league to League One with back-to-back promotions in 2015 and 2016.
