Bristol rough sleepers can get cool shelter, sun cream and hats as 'extreme heat' hits

Today (August 11) Bristol City Council is opening additional centres for homeless people to get some vital shade and cool temperatures amid this week's 'extreme heat' amber weather warning. As another heatwave hits the UK, these temporary centres will be available for rough sleepers from today until Sunday (August 14).

Working with St Mungo's, a homeless charity that aims to end homelessness and rebuild the lives of rough sleepers, there will be opportunities for people to get away from the heat. The 'extreme heat' amber weather warning is in place for the South West and many other areas of the UK, and can cause health issues due to heat exhaustion.

Temperatures are expected to hit 33C today, with a rise to 35C tomorrow (August 12) and Saturday. At the centres available for rough sleepers to get some shade, St Mungo's will be handing out sun hats and sun cream, as well as providing people with advice on how to stay safe during the heat.

Bristol City Council tweeted: "Additional centres providing cool spaces and shade during the day will be available to people who are sleeping rough until Sunday.

"Hot weather is dangerous for people who are sleeping rough. During the extreme heat our teams are putting on additional shifts to provide water, sun cream and protection to people sleeping rough."

They also issued advice on how to help homeless people at this time, adding: "If you are worried about somebody sleeping rough, please contact StreetLink at www.streetlink.org - [and] if someone is in an emergency situation contact emergency services on 999." Rough sleepers will have access to the additional facilities until Sunday (August 14), whilst the four-day 'extreme heat' weather warning is in place.
