Bristol Kill the Bill riot: Man shouted abuse and knocked police officers over

A man has been jailed for violent disorder in the Bristol Kill the Bill riot. A video shows Richard Fox shouting abuse and knocking officers off their feet during the riot in 2021.

The 32-year-old, of Picton Street in Montpelier, pulled officers into the crowd during a skirmish between police and protesters in the city centre on March 21. He was also seen kicking some officers while others had their property, including helmets, batons and shields taken.

He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison at Bristol Crown Court today (Monday, May 22). Footage released by Avon and Somerset Police shows Fox with his hood up as he engaged with officers.

He claimed that he was trying to calm things down. However, Judge James Patrick described him as 'violent'.

The judge accepted though that the injury and damage Fox caused was 'modest'. He also added that the 32-year-old had been of previous good character.

His sentence means that, to date, 35 people have received immediate custodial sentences in connection with the riots. They total 111 years and 10 months.

Detective Superintendent James Riccio said: “Richard Fox sought to push, shove and kick officers. The wealth of evidence caught on their bodyworn’ cameras has helped lead to a guilty plea for violence disorder.

“There can be no excuse for wanton disorder and it is only right those responsible for the shameful night of violence witnessed in March 2021 are sentenced accordingly.”
