Bristol company making model body parts for medical training buys surgery software specialist

A Bristol company that manufactures realistic model body parts for medical training has acquired a firm which specialises in keyhole surgery simulations.

Limbs & Things, which is based in St Philips, has bought Scottish medical training equipment business eoSurgical for an undisclosed sum.

The Bristol company, which was founded in 1990 by Margot Cooper, said the addition of eoSurgical’s software, which has been used in more than 90 countries worldwide, would “significantly” broaden its offering in the laparoscopic marketplace.

EoSurgical’s simulators, developed by practising consultant surgeons Roland Partridge, Paul Brennan and Mark Hughes, are portable and are designed to allow training to take place in operating departments or even at home.

With the agreement, eoSurgical’s staff will join the Limbs & Things team and continue to help develop products from the company's Edinburgh base.

Nick Hull, managing director, Limbs & Things, said: “The market for laparoscopic simulation training is buoyant and continuing to grow. We are already the proud partners of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons in the supply of simulation trainers for their Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery programme.

“We are keen to invest further into this market space, which means that we can offer an even more accessible training experience with greater ability for self-directed training. It adds a further dimension to our current training range and ultimately helps to make patient outcomes safer and more reliable.”

Roland Partridge, co-director of eoSurgical, said: “Limbs & Things are internationally recognised as one of the leading players in medical task trainers, so it is a fantastic opportunity for us to become part of their team and add to their product portfolio with our portable devices and innovative software portfolio. We’re excited by the potential that this next chapter offers both of our businesses and the marketplace.”

Earlier this year, Limbs & Things signed a multimillion-pound deal with Northern Ireland-based medical simulator firm TruCorp to sell its products in the UK, Canada, the US and Australia.
