Bristol City predicted team vs Nottingham Forest: Nigel Pearson likely to make two changes

Nigel Pearson is likely to make one or two changes to the side that lost at home to Coventry on Tuesday.

The Bristol City manager picked a youthful but attacking line-up midweek on the back of a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chris Wilder's Middlesbrough and they were impressive in spells but ultimately left Ashton Gate without a deserved point.

Pearson has already admitted that it will be the same group of players who will make the trip to his hometown with no new injury concerns but no players set to make their return from the sidelines.

Unsurprisingly he gave nothing away when speaking to the club channel regarding his team selection when Pearson said: "Whether there will be changes you'll have to wait and see."

But he did admit he has had to be "a little bit creative from time to time" with the limited number of players at his disposal.

Here is how we think the Robins will line up at The Forest Ground as they bid to end their run of 10 away games without a victory.

Goalkeeper and defence

Dan Bentley's return to the starting line-up in his last two matches has brought a sense of reassurance and confidence to a defence that has proved vulnerable, particularly since the turn of the year.

Max O'Leary remains sidelined with an injury picked up against Swansea so the club captain is desperate to grasp his opportunity with both hands (no pun intended).

He has certainly impressed in his last two starts, making a string of impressive saves in the victory over Middlesbrough where he was desperately unlucky not to keep the club's first clean sheet since December 4.

He may have been on the losing side against Coventry, but he could not be blamed for either of their goals. His commanding presence from crosses has proven important in instilling trust between the defence and goalkeeper.

With no doubt that Bentley will keep his spot, whoever plays ahead of him could pose questions for the manager - including the formation.

The last two matches has seen Pearson switch to a back four with one midfielder dropping deep into that defensive line to help deal with their opponent's attack. There have been signs of improvement in the play so expect the manager to stick with that style of play despite Forest playing on their home turf.

Cameron Pring may return on the left for Bristol City (Robbie Stephenson/JMP)

That will mean a central defensive pairing of Tomas Kalas and Timm Klose - but it's the wing-backs where changes could be made. Youngster Sam Bell has started on the right in an unfamiliar role in the last two matches and has performed admirably.

But an away game to Forest is a different kettle of fish and Pearson may want to bring some more experience to his defence in a game which they could face periods of sustained pressure.

Jay Dasilva has started in each of the last nine matches so it would come as no surprise to see him on the team-sheet at 2pm on Saturday, although he could be back on the right side replacing Bell.

That means Cam Pring, who has come off the bench in the last two matches, could return to the side to take up a position on the left.

Midfield

Pearson has admitted himself that his options in the middle of the park are limited with Matty James and Andy King still sidelined.

The former is closing in on a return to action having started training and the club will take no risks on his return, ensuring they don't rush him back into action.

Until that moment, it will remain a similar rotation to the players at the manager's disposal with Alex Scott and Han-Noah Massengo destined to start.

Massengo will be desperate to make amends for his error against Coventry where his loose pass at the end allowed the visitors to snatch a very late winner.

One change that is almost certain to happen will be the return of Joe Williams in midfield. Pearson resisted starting him from the off against Coventry following his 80 minutes in the game three days prior against Middlesbrough - introducing him for the last 14 minutes.

The manager would have had a close eye on this fixture when deciding his team on Tuesday and with Williams well-rested, he will undoubtedly be back in the midfield.

With the tweak in formation, Williams started in that deep defensive midfield role against Boro to great effect, breaking up the play and looking more than comfortable in the back three when called upon.

Scott took that responsibility in Williams' absence in the week but the youngster, who was this week linked with a move to the Premier League, could be afforded to play higher up the pitch.

With Williams coming back into the side, it is likely to mean Ayman Benarous misses out. The Bristolian made just his sixth start of the season on Tuesday and certainly didn't look out of place before being subbed off with 15 minutes left to play.

Benarous possesses plenty of attacking qualities and prefers to play higher up the pitch but for a game against the calibre of Forest, Pearson will prefer a more defence-minded player in his place.

Strikers

Remarkably, only three teams have scored more goals than Bristol City this season in Fulham, Bournemouth and QPR - all who occupy the top three positions.

Therefore it comes as no surprise that Pearson has opted to start with his trusted front three in the last eight matches - scoring 13 times in the process. You have to go back to November 28 for the last time The Robins failed to score in the league.

Pearson has made his thoughts completely clear on changing his attack - he will only do it if it is enforced and with Antoine Semenyo, Andi Weimann and Chris Martin fit to start, there will be no tactical surprises.

It's harsh on Nahki Wells who is determined to prove himself but he will have to remain patient for his opportunity which will surely arrive between now and the end of the season.

His last two team selections posed questions as to how the front three would set up, with speculation that Weimann and Semenyo would occupy the wider positions to help with the balance of the side.

But it became evident that Pearson wasn't even willing to change their positioning, and rightly so, with Weimann occupying that No10 role behind his team-mates.

Opposition managers know exactly what they're about to come up against, but stopping them is a different matter.

Coventry manager Mark Robins summed it up after the game on Tuesday when he discussed their threats in his post-match press conference. He said: "The front three are a real handful.

"They’re trying to run in-behind you, we couldn’t give them that which was good but it means we’re in a different starting position.

"Semenyo is in a really good form, Weimann is too and Chris Martin is an old head, a wise head who’s got a lot of qualities and strengths. The power from even the young lads and the big lads with (Cam) Pring coming on – powerful, pace – that was the same."

Martin will also head into the game buoyed by scoring his first goal in five games against Coventry - his ninth of the season.
