Former Bristol City midfielder Wade Elliott is set to be announced as the new head coach of Cheltenham Town next week in what will be the 43-year-old’s first managerial role.
Gloucestershire Live report that Elliott will be named as Michael Duff’s successor at Whaddon Road, having been brought to the club as his former Burnley teammate’s No2 last year.
Elliott made 61 appearances for City from 2013-15, in what was the last club of a distinguished playing career, and was a major catalyst behind the Robins revival under Steve Cotterill as they earned promotion and won the EFL Trophy at Wembley in the 2014/15 season. His leadership and influence in the dressing room helped foster the unique team spirit that bound that squad together.
He was later named Under-21 coach at Ashton Gate and placed in temporary charge alongside John Pemberton in between Cotterill’s sacking and the appointment of Lee Johnson in 2016.
Elliott, who is still based in Bristol, had enjoyed an extensive and impressive playing career with Bournemouth, Burnley and Birmingham City and also served as Under-23 coach at Stoke City before moving to Cheltenham to work alongside Duff.
One of his first games in charge will be against City as Cheltenham will face their West Country neighbours in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the High Performance Centre on July 6.
Cheltenham finished 15th in League One last season - their highest ever finish - after Duff had led them to the League Two title in the previous campaign. Duff departed earlier this month to take over at Barnsley.
