Nigel Pearson has declared Timm Klose fit to face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday although his centre-back partner Tomas Kalas remains a doubt.
Both players picked up knocks during the defeat at home to Birmingham which saw Klose subbed off at half-time in replace of Rob Atkinson.
Kalas, who was forced off in the final 10 minutes in the loss at Nottingham Forest in the week prior, played the full 90 minutes but the manager admitted he is struggling with two separate issues and they will be forced make a late decision on his availability.
Speaking in his pre-Blackburn press conference, Pearson said: "Timm Klose is fine, he's fit.
"Tomas Kalas is struggling, he's a doubt so we'll see but everyone else seems ok. It's a knock to his knee and also a groin issue but we'll see how it is."
Pearson is also admitted he is increasingly wary of the amount of football Kalas has been playing, not just this season, but over the last three years for both club and country.
The 28-year-old has featured 41 times throughout the campaign and the manager is eager to hand him a break having admitted he has not been at the top of his game in recent weeks.
Only Andi Weimann has played more minutes than the centre-backs 3,064 this term, while no outfield player was on the field for longer than his 3,383 in 2020/21. Kalas also played six matches for the Czech Republic in the build-up and then during Euro 2020 as they reached the quarter-finals, before less than four weeks of rest and into this Championship campaign
"He's not at the top end of his game," he added. "Last weekend, you have to remember he's an international as well, he's had no break last summer.
"He played most of the games last year, he's played a full international programme - the same the year before - so he's had three years of continual football matches and training has been more or less a regular for the international side.
"His mind and body probably need a breather as well so if he misses out this week, he misses out and it's an opportunity for him to recover somewhat.
"You know what you're going to get with him in terms of commitment but everyone has a threshold in their ability to stay at high standards and I think that's something that I, as a manager, I'm very mindful of."
If Kalas is rested or unable to feature, with a trip to Barnsley to follow on Tuesday night, it could provide an opportunity for Rob Atkinson to make his first league start of the year.
The centre-back put in an assured performance against Blues last weekend following his half-time introduction and Pearson was buoyed by his cameo, suggesting he now has an opportunity to stake his claim.
Pearson said: "Rob's had a bit of a mix first season at Championship level. I think he's started very well for us and had a bit of illness and struggled to recapture his fitness and form but I think he came back in and performed pretty well.
"it's always an opportunity for someone and he seems in good spirits too so hopefully he can finish the season strongly."
George Tanner won't feature as he still progresses from his hamstring injury although Robbie Cundy or Zak Vyner could return to the substitute bench after they were left out of the squad last weekend.
