Bristol City have been fined £7,000 by the FA, and Stoke City £9,000, following their part in a melee at the bet365 Stadium sparked by a bizarre incident involving goalkeeper Dan Bentley and Potters forward Jacob Brown.
After Bentley shepherded a long ball out of play for a goal kick, the Robins captain was wrestled over the advertising hoardings by Brown with the two refusing to let go of each other. Players from both teams then piled in as a scuffle ensued with Joe Williams fronting up to Brown.
Potters midfielder Joe Allen even appeared to throw a punch from the back of the crowd but there is no indication the FA are pursuing an investigation regarding the Wales international’s conduct. City went on to win the game 1-0 following a late Jay Dasilva goal.
Bentley and Brown were both booked by referee Matt Donohue, along with Williams and Stoke striker Steven Fletcher, and after being charged by the FA earlier this month, the clubs have received their punishments. The sanctions were under FA Rule E20.1 and failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.
Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson said the incident "made me smile" in his post-match press conference. "They were two stubborn players who didn't want to let go and officials dealt with it pretty well. I hoped it wasn't going to be one of those silly ones when players were shown red cards."
