Brisbane Roar have announced the shock sacking of head A-League Women coach Garrath McPherson just four rounds into the season.

Roar chief executive Kaz Patafta said a replacement would be "made imminently" ahead of the round five clash with Western United at Ballymore on Sunday.

McPherson was an assistant, including in the 2017/18 premiership-winning campaign, before taking over as head coach ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The club has not played finals under his stewardship and finished an underwhelming sixth and ninth in McPherson's two full seasons in charge,

Last season Matildas campaigners Katrina Gorry and Larissa Crummer were members of the squad but the Roar failed to find any consistency.

This season the Roar are in fourth position on the ladder after four rounds.

They started with wins over Melbourne Victory and Sydney before losing to Wellington and then drawing against Central Coast on Sunday.

The middle-of-the-road performances under McPherson have clearly cost him his job.

Patafta thanked McPherson for his "leadership and dedication" but indicated that the Roar have set their sights on a higher level of achievement than what has been attained the past two seasons.

"Garrath's contribution to the club has been outstanding," Patafta said.

"However, we believe it is time for the (ALW) program to be rejuvenated. We have set high expectations for our women's team and want to see certain improvements across the board."
