Manor Solomon scored a later winner after Bernd Leno heroics as Fulham secured a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory at Brighton.
Brighton had dominated the game, but it was Israel international Solomon, who played under De Zerbi at Shakhtar Donetsk, who struck two minutes from time to send his side above the hosts into sixth place in the table.
Brighton, who had gone five games unbeaten in the league, were left to rue a failure to take their chances with 20 goal attempts compared to just five for Fulham.
Solly March and Facundo Buonanotte had goals disallowed for the Seagulls, who failed to score in the top flight for the first time since October, despite registering 21 attempts.
De Zerbi berated referee Darren England following the final whistle.
Fulham have 38 points from 24 games, one point behind fifth-placed Tottenham, while Brighton have 35 points having played 22 games.
