Bride needs to transport dress for wedding in Italy and she refuses to check it. Then viewers weigh in: ‘I bought a seat for mine!’

Wedding planning is notoriously stressful. A destination wedding outside of the country? It’s probably the cherry on top of the wedding cake. Beyond the financial strain, sending invitations months in advance and searching for the ideal venue, nothing compares to mapping out how the perfect wedding dress arrives at the destination. For this Illinois-based bride-to-be, she turned to TikTok for advice on how to transport her dress to Italy.

Wedding dress quandary

As she stands in her house, bride Sydney Sauerwein (@sydneylayne2) holds up her white wedding dress, its packaging towering over her through a six-second clip. Since her venue is in Tuscany, Italy, she is in a dilemma. So, she is seeking answers from other brides.

“Brides of TikTok, help me,” she writes in the text overlay. “How am I getting this monster of a wedding dress on a plane to Italy?” However, the content creator has no intention of going through the baggage check. “And yes. I’m refusing to check it,” she adds.

Despite the big day being nearly a year away, it’s already causing Sauerwein anxiety.  “Wedding is not for ten months and I’m already having palpitations about how I’m going to get this dress to Italy,” she expresses in the captions.

Viewers offer solutions

With 14.5 million views, many brides came to her rescue in the comments section by sharing how they traveled with their special dress safely.

“I bought a seat for mine!!!” one comment with over 29k likes wrote.

“Wally bag. We fit my dress and my husbands suit. Glad we got it because they told us there wasn’t room in the 1st class closet… and we put it overhead,” a second recommended.

“I just did this. I rolled it up into a carry on suitcase and got it steamed when I got to Italy. Good luck!” a third suggested.

Furthermore, alleged flight attendants entered the chat, revealing that they stored the dresses in the first-class closets for the brides-to-be in this situation.

“FA here! I always let brides put their dresses in the closet!! However, i do require a picture bc i want to see it,” one flight attendant stated.

“Former flight attendant here. We would put dresses into closets,” another echoed.

Can wedding dresses be stored in flight class closets?

Indeed, they can, but it varies by airline. Instead of relying on flight attendants’ kindness or assuming they’ll allow you to store it there, check with your airline to avoid extra hassle. On travel day, notify the flight attendants in advance. On the other hand, if this isn’t allowed and the tickets are purchased, The Knot proposes several alternatives:

  • Checking it in as carry-on and storing it in a garment bag
  • Purchase an extra seat for it
  • As a last resort, pack it in the original or garment bag as checked luggage and add an Air Tag to track it

Regardless of which option a bride pursues, it’s imperative to have the dress with them at all times, properly packed to preserve it.
