Brian O'Driscoll among rugby fans who all have the same complaint about new URC trophy

Brian O'Driscoll was one of many rugby fans to crack the same joke upon seeing the new United Rugby Championship trophy.

The domestic competition was rebranded as the URC at the start of the season and it has now been revealed it will have a suitably new trophy for its first winners.

It's quite a sleek and slender design compared to your average sporting trophy.

And crucially, it doesn't appear to have any bowl-like element that would allow players from the winning team to drink alcohol from it.

BOD was among those to poke fun at it over this lack of practicality.

He tweeted: "Number 1 rule for any trophy (football WC trophy aside) you have to be able to have a celebratory drink from it."

Similarly, Willie asked: "How are you meant to drink out of that?!"

However, the designers Thisaway were seemingly cognizant of this potential weakness in the eyes of the rugby fraternity and have actually made the top removable.

This then reveals a hidden bowl within with sufficient space to fill it up with whatever liquid you fancy.

A URC spokesperson explained: ‘"Early in the process, the URC reached out to former coaches and players who had won the league to get their opinions about what makes a great trophy.

"The points of emphasis from those who had earn the silverware were: weight, size and the ability to drink from it."

Entitled The Array, the trophy will be presented to whomever wins the competition's final on June 18.

The tournament's diversity is incorporated in its design plan as etched on the arms are the logo designs created to represent the Irish, Welsh, South African and Scottish-Italian Shields, while the word ‘champions’ is engraved in different languages.

Interestingly, in the accompanying promotional tweet around its release, the URC refer to it eventually being awarded to the 'URC 1' champions.

That appears to be an innovation taken onboard from American football where each individual Super Bowl is numbered in order to help differentiate one year's champs from the next.

Given the URC are backed by American entertainment agency Roc Nation, who were founded by rap icon Jay-Z, it's a total shock there's elements of US sports culture influencing it.
