Brian Kerr accuses Stephen Kenny of putting 'blinkered view' on poor results after Armenia loss

Brian Kerr has accused Stephen Kenny of putting "a blinkered view" on Ireland's disappointing results under his reign.

The Boys in Green lost 1-0 to Armenia in Yerevan last Saturday in another embarrassing result following a previous loss to Luxembourg, as well as draws with Azerbaijan, Qatar and Bulgaria.

Kenny claimed after the match that his side didn't deserve to lose before adding that they only had themselves to blame for the result.

But former Ireland boss Kerr didn't agree with Kenny's "summary" of the game.

He said on Virgin Media Sport following Germany's 1-1 draw with England on Tuesday night: "They [Ireland] genuinely didn't play badly in the first half and they created a few chances, but they lost the match in the end and it was a very disappointing result.

"Stephen said after the match that once again it was a match that they didn't deserve to lose. I didn't think that was an accurate summary as he said the same thing after various other matches that they lost.

"He always puts a blinkered view of how the team has performed in the match and how the result has turned out."

Looking ahead to tonight's game against Ukraine at the Aviva Stadium, Kerr added: "It could be a very difficult match against Ukraine. I'm not sure what sort of state the Ukrainian team will be in given that they've had two very tough matches where they've started the same 11 in both matches. They've used a few substitutes late on in the games who have looked adequate.

"I'm not sure their mental state would be great for getting up for a game having come so close to making the World Cup and really if they had of got the penalty they deserved against Wales who knows what would have happened?

"But they played very, very well in both games and they'll prove a test and once again it will be a test of Stephen's selection but also the tactical lineup and the shape of the team.

"I think it's been fairly consistent that playing the system he's playing now the 3-4-3 while it works against better teams and we're forced back into a back five shape and a very compact setup, when we're playing against teams who sit in against us we haven't had the ability to really break them down."
