Brexit Protocol 'risk' to Northern Ireland's place in UK must be addressed, says Foreign Secretary

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has said post-Brexit trading issues which "risk and undermine" Northern Ireland's place within the UK must be addressed.

He was speaking ahead of meeting Stormont party leaders in Belfast on Wednesday to discuss the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Secretary of State Chris Heaton-Harris will also take part in the talks which the UK government hopes will help restore Stormont power-sharing.

Devolved government has been in limbo since last February when the DUP withdrew its First Minister from the Executive in protest against the protocol.

The party has said it will not resume power-sharing until radical changes are made to the protocol, which has angered unionists for creating new checks on trade into Northern Ireland from Great Britain.

A deal earlier this week between the UK and European Union on post-Brexit data-sharing was hailed as a positive step in ongoing talks to resolve the impasse.

The agreement is expected to be discussed when Mr Cleverly and Mr Heaton-Harris meet Stormont party leaders in Belfast.

The ministers will also meet business groups to help understand the impact of the protocol on trade and inform discussions with the EU, the government said.

Their visit will include a tour of Saintfield Garden Centre and Nursery.

In a statement Mr Cleverly said: "My preference is for a negotiated solution, but the UK's priority is protecting the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement and preserving political stability in Northern Ireland.

"I am listening to the concerns of people and businesses in Northern Ireland and am keenly aware that the current situation isn't working.

"We need to address those issues with the protocol that risk and undermine the place of NI in the UK."

Mr Heaton-Harris said: "A solution to the problems created by the Northern Ireland Protocol is clearly desired by all across business and in government.

"As the Foreign Secretary has said, the government is committed to resolving these problems as soon as possible.

"I am firmly of the belief too that what people in Northern Ireland want most is to see their elected politicians back at work.

"Accountable political leadership is fundamental to secure a sustainable future for all in NI."

The visit follows their meeting on Monday with European Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic in London, where an agreement was reached on the EU's access to UK IT systems to provide live information about what goods are moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.

Stormont party leaders are also due to hold separate talks later this week with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer.

The meetings come ahead of a looming deadline to restore devolved government at Stormont.

If a new Executive is not formed by January 19, the UK government assumes a legal responsibility to call a fresh Assembly election by April 13.

The government introduced legislation to extend the timeframe for forming an Executive after a previous deadline of October 28 was missed.
