Brentford are willing to break their transfer record in a bid to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Brennan Johnson.

The Bees have had a number of approaches knocked back for the 20-year-old but are prepared to go again in a bid to strike a deal with the Championship club, who are reported to be demanding a fee of £18million.

Brentford are willing to go well above their club-record transfer fee of £13.5m, which was set in the summer when Kristoffer Ajer joined from Scottish side Celtic.

Thomas Frank is keen to bolster his squad this week in order to avoid slipping into a relegation fight after coming unstuck following a flying start to the season.

Johnson claimed a goal and an assist in Nottingham Forest's win over Barnsley last night, taking his tally to seven goals and five assists for the campaign.

Frank is eager to add this month but recently complained that the Championship can be overpriced.

"I think the Championship is a good league to look at," the Dane said last week.

"I think the Championship is too expensive if you ask me, I think we pay too much for the quality of player [compared] to what you get in Europe.

"Not that it is bad quality, just because of all that English bit that I haven't understood yet."
