Brentford striker Ivan Toney hit with new FA charge over alleged betting breaches

The Football Association (FA) have confirmed that Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been hit with a fresh charge of misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of their betting rules.

Toney, 26, was charged over 232 alleged breaches of betting rules back in November. Now, a new statement, which was released by the FA on Monday evening, reads: "Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the FA's betting rules.

"In addition to the previous charge, it is alleged that the Brentford FC forward breached FA rule E8 a further 30 times between March 14 2017 and 18 February 2019. Ivan Toney has until Wednesday 4 January 2023 to provide a response."

Brentford released a statement of their own in response to Toney's latest FA charge, which read: "The FA have informed Brentford FC that Ivan Toney has been charged in relation to additional alleged breaches of their betting rules.

"Our private discussions with Ivan and his legal representatives on this matter continue. Ivan has until Wednesday 4 January 2023 to provide a response. We will make no further comment at this stage."

The charge Toney received earlier this year came just a week-and-a-half after it emerged that the forward was under investigation by the FA. Toney issued a statement at the time that confirmed he was "assisting the Football Association with their enquiries".

Toney wrote in a social media post: “I’m aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today. I have been assisting the Football Association with their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion.

“I am a proud Englishman and it has always been my childhood dream to play for my country at a World Cup finals.”

It was initially believed that Toney, who failed to make England's 26-man World Cup squad, was under investigation in relation to alleged offences before he joined Brentford back in August 2020. However, the statement released by the FA last month confirming that Toney had been charged revealed that some of the alleged breaches of betting rules took place after he joined the Londoners.

The FA statement confirming Toney's initial charge last month read: "Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA's Betting Rules.

"It is alleged that the Brentford FC forward breached FA Rule E8 232 times between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021. Ivan Toney has until Thursday 24 November 2022 to provide a response."
