Brentford open Thomas Frank contract talks as manager attracts interest

Thomas Frank says he still has “a lot of things to achieve” at Brentford after opening initial talks with the club over a new contract.

This week marked four years since Frank took over from Dean Smith as Bees boss and the Dane has overseen a remarkable period in the club’s history, including two Championship play-off finals, the move from Griffin Park to the Gtech Community Stadium, promotion to the Premier League and a successful first campaign in the top flight of English football since 1947.

Frank committed himself to Brentford until 2025 when he signed a new deal in January but the club are already looking secure his future with improved terms.

The 49-year-old has been linked to Leicester and Brighton this season and it has been reported that his contract currently includes a buy-out clause, possibly as low as £3million.

Other jobs could become available before the World Cup and Brentford have moved to try to head off any prospect of Frank being poached by holding contract talks with him.

While he did not confirm formal discussions over an extension, ahead of tonight’s west London derby against Chelsea, Frank hinted his work is far from done.

“A lot of rumours out there in many ways,” Frank said. “One thing for sure is that I’m very happy here at Brentford, there are a lot of things to achieve, I’m very ambitious on behalf of the club but I have a contract running to 2025, that’s it, let’s see what happens in the future.

“I speak constantly to [owner] Matthew Benham and [director of football] Phil Giles about everything but we’re focusing on the Chelsea game.”
