Brentford fume at Everton as Richarlison change and what Ashley Cole did spotted

Frank Lampard kicked-off his Everton tenure with a 4-1 victory over Brentford in the FA Cup.

The Blues took the lead through Yerry Mina before Richarlison doubled the advantage three minutes into the second half after he finished past the onrushing David Raya.

Ivan Toney then reduced the arrears after he converted from the penalty spot after being brought down by Jordan Pickford inside the area.

But Everton made sure of their passage into the fifth round, where they will face Bournemouth or Boreham Wood, thanks to a Mason Holgate header and a late Andros Townsend strike.

PHIL KIRKBRIDE: What Everton fans did speaks volumes as Frank Lampard left wanting more

And below are six moments you may have missed from the game.

Brentford's players and manager fume

Midway through the second-half of the game and tempers began to rise when Everton refused to stop, or put the ball out of play, as Brentford’s Sergi Canos lay on the ground.

Lampard's side, in possession of the ball, looked like they were going to stop, only for referee Michael Oliver to point to his hip as an indication that the injury was not to the former Liverpool man's head and play could continue.

And play on the Blues did with them eventually winning a corner that came to nothing.

However, before the corner was taken, a number of Brentford’s players, led by captain Pontus Jansson, made their feelings known to Oliver.

While on the touchline, Thomas Frank, and members of his coaching staff, could be seen complaining aggressively to fourth official Andrew Madley.

Richarlison makes goalscoring change

It was a tale of two chances for Richarlison.

With Everton already leading 1-0 thanks to Mina’s header, the Brazilian raced through on goal, but could only fire well over.

But three minutes into the second half and the former Watford man would make no mistake when sent in the clear by compatriot Allan.

Despite the presence of the onrushing Raya, Richarlison coolly poked the ball past the Brentford goalkeeper and into the empty net.

And it appears a change of boots at half-time did the trick. As pointed out by Blues fan @EFC_Martin1 on Twitter, Richarlison started the game today with the new Nike 'Mercurial Vapor 14’s', before switching back to his classic 'Mercurial Vapor 13' red boots for the second-half.

Longer than normal air raid siren

Everton's new modification to Z Cars has been in existence for a couple of years now, with the air raid siren always heard before the club’s traditional walk out music is played.

However, there seemed to be an extra long air raid siren used ahead of Saturday’s game, which was then followed by a long pause before Z Cars started playing.

To put the duration of the siren in context, by the time it finished playing Brentford’s players were already lined up on the pitch having made their way from the temporary away dressing rooms in the Park End car park.

But once Z Cars did start playing, Goodison Park managed to create its strongest atmosphere in years as Lampard kicked-off his reign with a win.

Different view for Cole

Fresh from being named on Lampard’s coaching staff on Thursday, Ashley Cole took up a different position to watch Saturday's game unfold.

As members of Lampard’s backroom team all joined him on the bench, Cole instead joined members of the media in the press box.

Sitting on the front row, Cole was sat alongside members of the Everton analysts team, who, as well as watching the action live, were also tracking proceedings on their Apple Mac laptops.

Browning in attendance

On every matchday you are likely to see a host of former Everton players in attendance, whether it be in the stands, press box or directors box.

But one interesting spectator in the directors box for yesterday’s game was former Blues defender Tyias Browning.

Browning joined Everton in 2004 as a 10-year-old but after 15 years at the club he made the huge decision to depart for East Asia, joining Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande for an undisclosed fee.

But the centre-back, who can also be deployed as a full-back, seems to have adapted well to life in China and has even changed his name.

Browning has been playing in China under the name Jiang Guangtai and even made his debut for the Chinese national team back in 2020.

But it was good to see him back at Goodison Park for yesterday’s FA Cup clash - although a lot has certainly changed since his days with the club’s first-team.

Lampard makes Everton history

He may have only been in the job for less than a week, but Lampard has already written his name into the Everton history books.

The 4-1 victory over Brentford was the biggest margin by which an Everton manager has won his first game in charge of the club.

Questions were rightly asked by supporters on social media about Mike Walker's 6-2 win over Swindon Town in the opening weeks of reign.

However, as pointed out by Everton statistician, and Royal Blue podcast regular, Gavin Buckland, Walker actually kicked-off his reign with a 1-1 draw at Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup.

Walker's first Premier League game in the charge of the Blues came against Swindon a week later at Goodison Park.
