Brennan Johnson and Sam Surridge respond to Nottingham Forest transfer deal

Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson and Sam Surridge are among those to have sent a message to teammate Lewis O’Brien following confirmation of his move to America.

The midfielder has signed a loan deal until the summer with Major League Soccer side DC United, with the US club having an option to make the move permanent at the end of the deal. The transfer sees him join up with former Derby County manager Wayne Rooney.

The move comes after O’Brien’s proposed loan transfer to Championship side Blackburn Rovers fell through late on deadline day in January, due to paperwork not being submitted in time. Rovers did appeal the EFL decision to not allow him to sign, but that was not successful.

The situation left O’Brien in limbo with Steve Cooper leaving him out of the Premier League squad for the second half of the campaign. It led to talk that a move to America, where the transfer window is still open, could be on the cards.

The midfielder’s temporary move to DC United was confirmed on Monday. Forest manager Cooper explaining the decision to let him leave the club.

"Lewis deserves this opportunity to go and play football," he said. "Everyone knows about his situation, so now he is able to go and get some games under his belt between now and the end of the season and it will be a real positive for him. It will be a great experience and we wish him well."

The player himself has since reacted to the move, saying that he ‘can’t wait to get going’ in a post on social media. The message has prompted a lot of well wishes from Forest fans.

Among the replies were Forest teammates Johnson and Surridge. The latter writing: “Good luck mate,” while Johnson replied with: “All the best brother.”

O’Brien had not started a Premier League game since being taken off at half time of the 4-0 loss against Leicester City back in October. He played a total of 13 times in the Premier League for Forest since moving from Huddersfield Town in the summer.
