Brendan Rodgers leaves Leicester City as club fight to avoid Premier League relegation

Brendan Rodgers has left Leicester City by mutual consent following a seven-game winless run which left the club in the relegation zone.

The Foxes lost 2-1 at fellow strugglers Crystal Palace on Saturday to extend their miserable run, which has now encompassed six defeats and one draw in their last seven matches in all competition. That result also saw Leicester drop into the bottom three.

Leicester have picked up just one point from their last six Premier League matches while they were also dumped out of the FA Cup by Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the Fifth Round. The weekend loss at Selhurst Park has brought the four-year rein of Rodgers at the Foxes to an end.

Rodgers took the reins at the Midlands club in February 2019, leaving Scottish giants Celtic to replace Claude Puel in the dugout. The club finished fifth in successive campaigns in the Northern Irishman's first two full seasons.

However, Rodgers had his side in the top four for the majority of both those campaigns before fading in the closing weeks of the campaign. However, in the 2020/21 campaign, he guided the club to the FA Cup trophy - beating Chelsea in the showpiece. The club added the Community Shield title the following year.

The club’s long-serving first team coaches Adam Sadler and Mike Stowell will oversee the club’s first-team training until a successor is appointed. Rodgers’s assistant Chris Davies and fitness coach Glen Driscoll will also be leaving with the club, who have placed on record their thanks and best wishes for their future careers.

Leicester City Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: “The achievements of the team under Brendan’s management speak for themselves – we’ve experienced some of our finest footballing moments under his guidance and will always be grateful to him and his staff for the heights they helped us to reach on the pitch.

“Off the pitch, Brendan embraced the culture of the Club and helped cultivate an outstanding developmental environment, particularly during the transition to Seagrave, and provided strong leadership during the unprecedented challenge of the coronavirus pandemic. His place in Leicester City history is assured.”

Srivaddhanaprabha continued: “However, performances and results during the current season have been below our shared expectations. It had been our belief that continuity and stability would be key to correcting our course, particularly given our previous achievements under Brendan’s management. Regrettably, the desired improvement has not been forthcoming and, with 10 games of the season remaining, the Board is compelled to take alternative action to protect our Premier League status.

“The task ahead of us in our final 10 games is clear. We now need to come together – fans, players and staff – and show the poise, quality and fight to secure our position as a Premier League club.”
