Brenda Edwards says she is still triggered by the tragic loss of her son Jamal, who died this year aged 31.
The Loose Women star, 53, was speaking to Lorraine Kelly, 62, about life without the entrepreneur, who was an ambassador for the Prince's Trust.
Describing how she felt four months after the heartbreaking loss, she explained: "There's triggers, I don't know what they are, they just happen. But you have to allow yourself to cry when you want to cry".
Earlier this month, Brenda revealed Jamal had died from arrhythmia as a result of taking recreational drugs.
Admitting she was in a "state of shock" at the time, she told Lorraine her Loose Women colleagues had been so supportive.
"Everyone at ITV has been amazing," she explained.
"Charlene and Judi came over with food - the whole team have been great."
Brenda also revealed she'd received good wishes from Prince Charles.
Recalling meeting the monarch to celebrate the Commonwealth Diaspora of the UK, she revealed: "He expressed his condolences.
"He said your son was amazing and he did so much for the Prince's Trust over the decade.
"It just made me really proud to hear that and how many young people Jamal helped
"It keeps me going."
The singer has been inundated with well wishes since the tragic passing of her son with many pointing out what a good mum she was.
Loose Women's Janet Street Porter said: "I know Brenda so well. She was the best possible mum she could have been."
As well as returning to the panel, Brenda has bagged herself the role of Mama Morton in Chicago.
The singer is replacing Gemma Collins in the production, who injured her knee and was unable to continue.
Jamal came to see his mum in the show "many times" when she first starred in the production in 2006 and Brenda said he was "very, very supportive" of her musical theatre career.
The star appeared in the show in 2006 after she shot to fame on the X Factor.
"It was scary because I've done so many different shows since, " Brenda explained.
"But everyone is so lovely".
Lorraine is on weekdays on ITV at 9am
