Breastfeeding on Epilepsy Medications Was Not Linked to Poorer Language or Behavior Scores in Children at Age 6

Breastfeeding while taking common newer epilepsy medications was not associated with poorer language or behavior development in children at age 6, according to a study published Sept. 30 in JAMA Network Open.

The findings speak to a decision many new mothers with epilepsy face. As the study authors wrote, "Concerns regarding infant exposure to antiseizure medications (ASMs) via breast milk frequently discourage breastfeeding in women with epilepsy."
