The New York Liberty made a significant announcement on Monday, revealing that the reigning WNBA MVP, Breanna Stewart, has re-signed with the team. This move solidifies the Liberty's starting lineup from last season, which reached the WNBA Finals but fell short against the Las Vegas Aces.

General manager Jonathan Kolb expressed his excitement, stating, 'It’s a monumental day in New York as we are thrilled to welcome back the MVP, Breanna Stewart. Stewie’s return marks our unwavering commitment to excellence and our collective drive to bring a championship to New York.'

Stewart, who joined the Liberty last season after a successful tenure with the Seattle Storm, delivered impressive statistics, averaging 23 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. Her stellar performance earned her the league MVP title for the second time in her career, narrowly edging out competitors Alyssa Thomas of the Connecticut Sun and A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces.

The 29-year-old forward previously claimed the league MVP award in 2018 and played a pivotal role in securing two WNBA championships for Seattle in 2018 and 2020, earning Finals MVP honors on both occasions.

Despite falling short in the Finals against Las Vegas, the Liberty's decision to re-sign Stewart was a foregone conclusion after designating her as a franchise player. Stewart expressed her enthusiasm for the team's future, stating, 'I’m excited for what we’re doing here in New York and with the Liberty. I’m looking forward to it for many years to come.'

Stewart's new contract reportedly entails a one-year, non-guaranteed deal below the league's super maximum salary of nearly $242,000, providing the Liberty with increased roster flexibility. This strategic move positions the team for continued success as they strive to capture their first championship since 2002.

With Stewart's return, the Liberty are poised to build on their recent achievements and make a strong push for WNBA glory in the upcoming seasons.
