Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur substituted off injured during Ghana vs Uruguay at World Cup

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been substituted off during Uruguay's final Group H fixture against Ghana. The Spurs star has been one of the best players for his country at the World Cup so far.

Bentancur's substitution has sparked fears over a potential injury after being taken off in the 34th minute for Matias Vecino. Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0 but both teams failed to progress into the round of 16 stage after South Korea beat Portugal 2-1 and qualified based on goals scored.

Andre Ayew missed a penalty in the 22nd minute of the match after Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet brought down Mohammed Kudus. Ghana players, including Arsenal's Thomas Partey surrounded the penalty spot to stop anyone from scuffing the turf, but Ayew's spot kick was well saved by Rochet who redeemed himself after his silly foul.

Uruguay quickly took a two-goal lead following Ayew's penalty miss, with Giorgian De Arrascaeta scoring twice in six minutes to put his nation in the box seat to qualify from Group H ahead of Ghana. Spurs fans will not have been pleased to see Bentancur sat down on the pitch receiving treatment moments after the second goal, leading to him being substituted off.

The 25-year-old had his hands on his head as his teammates consoled him before he was helped to his feet and walked off the pitch. It's unclear what injury the Tottenham star has suffered, but he was visibly upset as he left the field of play with Vecino replacing him in midfield.

Bentancur has been one of the standout performers for Spurs so far this season and both the player and club will be hoping the injury is not too serious, with the Premier League set to resume on Boxing Day, with Spurs travelling to Brentford that day for a 12:30pm kick-off.
