Harry Winks has departed Tottenham Hotspur to complete a £10million move to Leicester City. Joining Spurs as a five-year-old, the midfielder's move to the East Midlands brings to an end his long association with the football club.
Named on the Tottenham bench for the very first time against Liverpool in March 2014, he made his senior bow for the club under Mauricio Pochettino eight months later during a Europa League win over FK Partizan. Later going on to feature regularly for the Argentine, including a start in the 2019 Champions League final against Liverpool, first-team opportunities unfortunately dried up for the player during Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte's tenures.
Given the green light to leave Tottenham Hotspur Stadium 12 months ago, the Spurs academy graduate instead joined Italian club Sampdoria on loan for the remainder of the campaign. Although he played no part in the first half of the campaign due to injury, the midfielder impressed from January onwards and made 20 appearances for the Genoa-based club.
Amid question marks over where exactly he would be playing his football in the 2023/24 campaign, Leicester City have moved quickly to secure a deal for Winks as they look to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Given Winks was on the verge of entering the final year of his Tottenham contract, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has managed to secure a £10m deal for the Hemel Hempstead-born player.
The 27-year-old will soon have the opportunity to come up against Tottenham for the very first time as Spurs and Leicester go head-to-head in a pre-season clash in Bangkok on Sunday, July 23. Winks departs Tottenham after registering five goals and six assists in 203 appearances for the football club.
He now completes a move to the Midlands with just 12 months left on his contract in north London. Upon his arrival at the King Power Stadium, Winks said: "I’m delighted. I’m really excited for the challenge ahead. It’s an amazing club with great history and the facilities are incredible. I’m just so happy to be here and ready to get going.
“I’m looking forward to getting started, to have a full pre-season with the team and come here early to get ready for the games coming up. It’s going to be an important few weeks to get everyone ready and to push myself getting fit.
“I’m also looking forward to a new challenge and to challenge myself. Coming to a club like Leicester is the perfect chance to do that.”
