Thomas Tuchel reveals reason for not bringing Romelu Lukaku on in Everton vs Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel has revealed that Romelu Lukaku did not come on against Everton because of Jorginho coming off at half-time. The Belgian striker was an unused substitute as he saw his current side lose to his former club at Goodison Park.

Richarlison handed Everton an early second-half lead after a mistake from Cesar Azpilicueta. When Chelsea needed a goal the most, they had the option of the club record signing to turn to, but instead, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech were given the nod.

When asked why he didn't turn to Lukaku on the bench, Tuchel replied: "Because we brought Jorginho off. We only had three changes."

Chelsea looked very stale in attack against Everton. The Blues struggled to create too many clear-cut chances, other than the three quick-fire opportunities right after the Toffees took the lead.

Mason Mount saw one of his strikes hit both posts, with Azpilicueta being denied by Jordan Pickford on the rebound. Antonio Rudiger then had a shot saved by Pickford right away after, but apart from that flurry, it was a tame attacking display from the visitors.

Tuchel was asked what he could do to combat Chelsea's recent attacking problems, and the German coach responded with: "If there is something I could do, I would try it.

"The key for me is to have a clean sheet. It's a different game against Man United, the game was more open, and there were more chances. This was more like the game against West Ham, and against West Ham, we had a clean sheet and played without any big mistakes. If you fall behind against an atmosphere like this, instil belief in the opponent's team, you struggle."
