Mum, 31, and her one-year-old baby girl killed in school bus crash

A mum and her baby have died after a devastating crash between a school mini bus and an Nissan car, according to police.

The accident happened on Long Island Express Drive South in Yaphank, New York State, on Thursday.

The woman, aged 31, was travelling northbound when an Nissan vehicle crashed into a mini-bus at an intersection, Patch reports.

The mum, who has been identified as 31-year-old Jacklyn Smolian, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her infant daughter, Joelaya Smolian-Davenport, who was strapped in a car seat in the back, was rushed to hospital in critical condition, the paper reported.

The baby later succumbed to her injuries.

Mirror Online have contacted the local police department for more information.

Before the baby died a witness said: "A horrific crash involving a mini school bus and Nissan here in Yaphank…a mother in her 30’s is dead…her one year old baby clinging to life"

Pictures from the scene show the minibus on its side just off the intersection.

Patch reported that a the driver of the mini-bus, a 73-year-old man, and a matron on the bus, a 61-year-old woman, are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

"When the officer arrived on the scene, the baby was pulled out of the vehicle by a pedestrian. The officer performed CPR, and EMS arrived and removed the child to LICH," Suffolk County Chief of Police Rodney Harrison said.

He continued: "This is an unfortunate situation. We're going to ask for everybody to keep their prayers out for the family. Hopefully the baby recovers from the injuries that she received in the vehicle collision."

There were no children on the bus.
