Man cut from vehicle with saw after two-car smash on busy main road

A man had to be cut from a car with a saw after a major two-vehicle smash on a busy main road in Rochdale on Wednesday night (October 26). Emergency services raced to the scene of the incident shortly before 7.30pm, on Manchester Road, close to Rochdale town centre.

One man was raced to hospital by paramedics from the scene, with the nature of his condition not yet confirmed. A railing along the road was also left damaged after the crash.

Shocking pictures from the scene show one car with a completely crushed bonnet, with another also damaged beyond repair, with all four of its doors cut off. The crash occurred at the junction with New Barn Lane.

A large police presence was at the scene, with multiple cordons erected as emergency services dealt with the incident. Fire crews also had to use specialist equipment, including a saw, to rescue one of the men trapped in one of the vehicles, and remained on the scene for an hour.

It has not been confirmed if any arrests have been made in relation to the incident, but Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for more details. The fire service confirmed they were initially called to Worcester Street, metres away from the crash.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 7.30pm this evening (Wednesday October 26), three fire engines from Rochdale central and Heywood fire station were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles on Worcester Street, Rochdale.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters used a saw, cutting equipment, hearth kit and lighting to rescue a man from one of the vehicles. The man was taken to hospital by colleagues from the North West Ambulance Service. Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour.”
