Iga Swiatek crashes out of Wimbledon as Ukraine hero Elina Svitolina beats world No.1

World number one Iga Swiatek has been dumped out of Wimbledon at the quarter-final stage at the hands of Elina Svitolina.

The thrilling encounter was won over three sets, with Svitolina being made to work for the first before eventually taking it 7-5. Swiatek responded by winning the second in an intense tie-break, but Ukrainian Svitolina made light work of the third and ran out 6-2 victor.

After securing her place in the final four of the competition, six months after having a baby, Svitolina was emotional as she told the BBC: "I don't really know what is happening right now in my head. Yeah, just really unbelievable.

"I'm really happy that I got the chance to play here again, and you know playing this great match in a great atmosphere, it was a really unbelievable feeling for me and I was fighting, it was not easy to play against Iga today she is world number one she is always fighting. Today was an unbelievable match and I am really happy that I could win this one."

The two share a great relationship off the court and Svitolina addressed that after her win, adding: Yeah definitely, not only is Iga a great champion she is also an incredible person, she was one of the first one who helped Ukrainian people and it was a huge help for Ukraine.

"For sure, it is not easy to play against someone you share a lot of good moments with and I think for her it was not easy but in the end just really proud of the effort put in today and thank you so much for cheering for me all the way."

Asked for comment on how she'll prepare for her semi-final on Thursday, Svitolina got plenty of laughs out of the Centre Court crowd when she admitted: "First of all, I am probably going to have a beer.

"I am just going to enjoy it with my team, at the beginning of the tournament if someone had told me and my team that we would be in the semi-final and beaten the world number one you know I would have just said that there are crazy.

"I am just going to enjoy tonight and then get some treatment, get some massage, much-needed, regroup and then just be ready for the next big battle."

Marketa Vondrousova awaits Svitolina in the last four, having eliminated world number four Jessica Pegula on court one earlier on Tuesday afternooon.

Svitolina has become a hugely popular figure during the tournament and has said on a number of occasions how proud she is to be representing her country at such a difficult time for Ukraine.
