Double-decker bus roof RIPPED off after hitting bridge

Dramatic pictures show the roof of a double-decker bus ripped off after hitting a bridge on Monday evening (April 10).

Police sealed off Barton Lane in Eccles after the major collision, that saw the bus smash into the bridge where the road runs beneath the Bridgewater Canal.

Pictures taken from the scene show the aftermath, with the entire roof completely ripped off and chairs on the upper floor left completely exposed. A number of police vehicles could also be seen in attendance.

One witness who contacted the Manchester Evening News said there were no passengers on board at the time. They added: "It was a low bridge that the bus tried to go under - but the bridge was too low and cut off the roof of the bus.

"It was around 9pm when the bus was approaching the bridge. I thought it was going to stop when they (the driver) realised the height restriction but it just carried on. Luckily there were no passengers on board.

"The bus drove all way under which peeled the top off with ease. Police responded and closed both sides, there are no ambulances present."

Greater Manchester Police also shared a picture of the crash, announcing that the road was closed, with the Ports Authority also called to assess the damage. It is unclear if there were any injuries in the incident, but the Manchester Evening News has contacted the force for more details.

Barton Lane was cordoned off by officers in both directions between Trafford Road to B5211 Redclyffe Road. A number of police vehicles were pictured at the scene.

In a tweet shared by GMP Traffic, the force wrote: "Barton Lane, Eccles is currently closed both ways due to a bridge strike by a bus. The road will remain closed until the Ports Authority can attend and assess / repair any damage. Please avoid and plan an alternative route as there may be subsequent local delays."

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service say they were not called to the incident.
