Human remains found deep in Brazil's remote Amazon rainforest have been confirmed as missing British journalist Dom Phillips.
An autopsy used dental records to match the remains with that of the 57-year-old Guardian writer.
On Wednesday a suspect confessed to killing a British journalist and an Indigenous expert in Brazil's remote Amazon.
The fishermen then led police to the spot where the bodies of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira were recovered, a federal investigator said.
The pair vanished on June 5, on a remote stretch of the Itaquai River in northeastern Brazil.
Indigenous community leaders raised the alarm after the pair did not meet their scheduled return from one of the remotest corners of the Amazon, following a reporting trip.
Brazil's Justice Minister Anderson Torres said on Friday autopsy has now confirmed the identity of the remains.
At a news conference in the Amazon city of Manaus, a federal police investigator said the prime suspect detailed what happened.
Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, 41, nicknamed Pelado, told officers he used a firearm to kill the men.
Blood was previously found on Pelado's boat, which is currently being analysed.
Now the bodies have been identified, they "will be returned to the families of the two", said Mr Torres.
He continued: "We found the bodies three kilometres (nearly two miles) into the woods." The justice minister said officers travelled about one hour and forty minutes by boat on a river and 25 more into the woods to reach the burial spot.
"We would have no way of getting to that spot quickly without the confession," Mr Torres said about the recovery of their bodies on Wednesday.
The area deep in the rainforest where they went missing has recently faced violent conflicts between fishermen, poachers and government agents.
Mr Phillips was an esteemed freelance foreign correspondent and regular contributor to The Guardian, and Mr Pereira was a respected former Brazilian Indigenous rights official. The pair were on a reporting trip for a book titled How to Save the Amazon when they went missing.
In a statement, Mr Phillips' wife Alessandra Sampaio said: "This tragic outcome puts an end to the anguish of not knowing Dom and Bruno's whereabouts.
"Now we can bring them home and say goodbye with love."
