A boy of 16 has died following a fatal smash involving a car and a motorbike on a main road in Stockport this morning.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: "Officers were called to Gorton Road, Reddish, just before 7am today, Tuesday, 24 January 2023, to reports of a collision between a car and a motorbike.

"As a result of the incident, a 16-year-old boy sustained serious injuries and sadly died a short time later.

"The boy’s family are being supported by specialist officers. A man in his 20s has been arrested for death by dangerous driving."

Residents reacted with shock and sadness as they woke up this morning to the scene. One woman who walked past the incident at around 7:30am told the M.E.N it was 'traumatic', with people crying and a body visible on the road.

Another two recalled the moment they woke up to 'lots of shouting' at around 6:30am. "I could tell something really bad had happened," one of them said. "Not long after that there were police everywhere."

A number of other eyewitnesses told the M.E.N they had seen debris from a car on the road.

“It’s really shocking,” one resident said “It’s a busy road. I was up at around 7:30am and I saw loads of police. They were still all here hours later. It seems like it’s really serious.”

A spokeswoman for GMP asked for any witnesses or anyone who has dashcam, doorbell or CCTV footage on, or near to, the junction of Gorton Road and Ainsdale Grove to call 101 quoting log number 544 of 24 January 2023.
