Bayern Munich retained the Bundesliga title on a dramatic final day that saw Borussia Dortmund throw away their advantage.
Dortmund went into the 34th game of the season with a two-point lead over the Bavarians, who lost at home last week against RB Leizpig to hand their rivals the initiative. Edin Terzic's side had been eyeing a first title since in 11 years, back when Jurgen Klopp was in charge.
However they were held by Mainz at home, with the visitors scoring twice in the first-half before a late comeback, which added to the drama. Dortmund scored with twenty minutes remaining and then levelled in the sixth minute of added time, but couldn't find the crucial third goal.
Their stalemate opened the door for Bayern however, who duly took advantage at Koln, as they registered a 2-1 win to pick up three points and continue their Bundesliga dominance. Jamal Musiala, who came on as a substitute, hammered home their winner in the 88th minute.
This was Dortmund's best opportunity to become champions of Germany in more than a decade, but they'll be left to lick their wounds with Jude Bellingham potentially departing this summer as a packed out Signal Iduna Park was stunned with several players slumped motionless on the pitch after the final whistle.
Conversely, Thomas Tuchel has been able to salvage Bayern's season. The Bavarians chose to axe Julian Nagelsmann in March and replace him with Tuchel, citing concerns over their development as their reason for changing.
Tuchel has struggled to get Bayern ticking however, winning less than half his games in charge. Dortmund's slip though means they've claimed the title for the 11th straight year. Failures in the cup and in Europe had meant those at the Allianz Arena were facing a trophyless year.
In the build-up to the final day Tuchel had suggested that, even a title win wouldn't make their season a success. He said: "It's our own fault, our own responsibility. Of course, we'll try to run the race to the end because we're obliged to give everything to the end.
"It won't be a season that we can be happy with. It won't be a season in which the number of points is enough for our demands, in which the quality of our game is enough for us. Regardless of how it goes in the end, it won't be a satisfactory season anymore."
