Block of flats explodes leaving five people injured as emergency services race to scene

Five people have been left injured after a block of flats reportedly exploded this evening.

Fire crews from four stations, police and paramedics raced to the scene of a large building explosion in Skelmersdale shortly before 6pm on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire said they were aware of a 'number of casualties' being treated by paramedics.

A number of residents in the area are also being evacuated from the area.

Residents reported on social media hearing 'the ground shake' when the explosion happened, LancsLive reports.

The condition of those injured is now known at this time. The cause of the suspected gas explosion is also unclear.

One woman said: "It’s in front of mine, felt my whole house shake."

Another person said they saw an air ambulance land nearby.

Images from the scene showed the back of a flat blown out with a sofa hanging off the end.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire said: "Four fire engines from Skelmersdale, Ormskirk and Bamber Bridge have been called to an explosion in a property on Tanfields, Skelmersdale.

A Cadent spokesperson said: "As the gas emergency service, we were called to an explosion in Skelmersdale this evening to support the emergency services. It is too early to speculate on the cause of the explosion.

"We will remain on site to carry out our usual safety checks and assist with the investigation. In any case, if you ever smell gas, inside the home or outside, call the National Gas Emergency service on 0800 111 999* immediately, day or night."
