A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after being hit by a vehicle on a busy main road in Bury. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, swarmed to the scene on Walmersley Road at 11am on Tuesday (December 6).
The woman, aged in her 80s, was rushed to Salford Royal Hospital from the scene with head injuries. The main road was closed off both ways between the junctions of Burrswood Avenue and Eastham Avenue throughout the day as investigations were carried out.
Her injuries are described as 'life threatening' with enquiries still ongoing into the incident. Police said the driver involved is believed to be in his mid-20s and remained at the scene after the crash to assist officers.

Pictures from the scene on Tuesday show a huge cordon in place, with multiple police vehicles at the scene following the crash. An air ambulance was also sent to the incident, along with paramedics.
The Moorside Action Team, made up of local councillors, wrote on Facebook following the collision: "Our thoughts are with the victim and we’ll continue to do all we can to make Walmersley Road safer for all users."
A police spokesperson said: “Greater Manchester Police were called to a road traffic collision on Walmersley Road, Bury at around 11am this morning (Tuesday 6 December 2022) involving a vehicle and a female pedestrian.
"It is believed the extent of the injuries are life-threatening. Enquiries are ongoing at this time and delays are expected to impact traffic and travel.”
A North West Ambulance spokesperson added: "We were called at 11:12am to a RTC involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. We sent various resources including an air ambulance. We took the patient, a female in her 80s, to Salford Royal hospital with head injuries."
