Brazilian judge blocks Sugarloaf Mountain zipline plans despite 95% completion

  • A Brazilian judge has blocked plans to construct a zipline connecting Sugarloaf Mountain to Morro da Urca in Rio de Janeiro. The proposed attraction would propel visitors at speeds of almost 62mph over four half-mile ziplines, reported BBC News.
  • The project, which was 95 per cent completed, faced strong opposition from local residents and environmental activists concerned about irreparable damage to the Unesco World Heritage Site.
  • Judge Paulo Andre Manfredini ruled that the developer and the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) must pay 30 million reals (£4.35m) in damages.
  • The judge emphasised the "inestimable value of Sugarloaf Mountain" in his decision to halt the construction.
  • The zipline developer is anticipated to appeal against the ruling.
