Recent drops in Brazil’s deforestation have been celebrated as a historic achievement. Forest loss in the Amazon fell by 23.5 per cent in 2025 compared to the previous year. This drop contributed to a 21 per cent national reduction in overall clear-cutting — the lowest level recorded since 2016.
Federal governance and control plans, such as Brazil’s Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Amazon, have been important drivers of this reduction.
