'Brazen' gang battered schoolboy as police hunt Lanarkshire thugs responsible

Police are hunting a gang of 'brazen' thugs who attacked a schoolboy in North Lanarkshire.

The 14-year-old was assaulted at the Clyde Walkway between Baron's Haugh Nature Reserve and the over bridge at Hamilton Road in Motherwell at round 9pm on Sunday. A group battered the teenager, leaving him with back and hand injuries and was rushed to hospital.

The severity of his injuries, the hospital he was taken to and his current medical condition were not disclosed. There are no descriptions of the suspects at this stage.

Officers probing the incident believe it was a 'targeted attack'.

Police Constable Ross Preston slammed the assault as 'brazen' and urges witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

He said: "Although the motive for the attack has still to be confirmed, we believe at this time it was a targeted attack. No matter the cause, the fact is that a 14 year old boy has been hospitalised after being attacked by a group of people who have been brazen enough to carry out the attack in a commonly used area by the River Clyde.

"This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated. If you have any information that may assist with the enquiry, please contact the Community Policing Team at Motherwell via 101 quoting reference 3007 of July 11.

"Alternatively, details can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
