A serious brain injury can begin with the same sudden event: a crash, a fall, or another blow to the head. Yet what happens afterward can look very different depending on where the patient lives.
That is one of the striking findings from the Global Neurosurgical Study-1, a prospective study that followed 2,165 patients with traumatic brain injury at 100 hospitals across 29 countries between 2019 and 2022. Researchers found major differences in the causes of injury, patients' ages, and how they reached hospitals across countries with varying levels of human development.
